I'm pretty happy with it, though! I have some ideas for improvements I could make, but I like the overall dynamics and a lot of the beats. I'm glad I picked it back up.🎉

I need to start setting time aside to read, holy shit. I feel like I've been writing nonstop since the fall and I've just lost the little spaces in my day when I could try and sink into a new fic, which means I've also lost the spaces when I can really process what I think of things and distill it into a comment. I'm traveling this week, which is always a crapshoot in terms of what I can get done both during and immediately after, so this feels like a March problem. Oof.

My biggest deadline/closest to completion works hit [redacted] scenes, which are the bane of my existence, so it was nice to relax and plot some gags for an indulgent ship.

I am no longer writing the fun part. I enjoy blocking beats in sex scenes and having written sex scenes, but writing them exhausts me about as much as writing straightforward exposition. Give me dialogue and gags 'til the cows come home, but applying the same satisfying arc of escalation/pay-off to sex? Nightmarish.

Fics written for Rare Pair Fest helped sustain me as a baby carat (my undying gratitude to the seokhan / seokhao visionaries), so it's a real dream come true to be a part of that community.🎉

A lot of words, but most of this week's writing felt like pulling teeth. I'm trying to take a few days off (I've written a lot in the past few months! There have been Life Events! It's time to rest!), but the knowledge of my deadlines plagues my lil' type-A brain.

The original secret plan for Roxas' birthday, which I've been keeping a secret since like November but apparently I'm extremely predictable so, fuck it, we're talking about it now. This got way too long and involved and is now part of an ~extended universe that will not be finished in time.

[Roxas don't read] I saw bleep bloop becoming a 7k+ monster with its own thoughts about what tropes it wanted and swapped to something else I knew Roxas would like that hadn't felt like fun in a while. Happily, bait is now proving to be a bunch of fun. Still not super confident I'll be able to get it done in time, but it's got chapter-breaks built in for serial publication should it come to that. Serial publication makes me extremely anxious for many reasons, but! Maybe it's time to test that particular boundary. Who could say.

Writing Exercise - let's go together

A couple different prompts coalesced to create this drabble, originally intended for a writing discord. I've already started fleshing it out into a full fic, but I decided to post this longer-than-normal exercise as it was while I get the rest of the fic hammered out.

This is a canon-complaint Pentagon drabble, Jinho/Kino, based on a moodboard and their little instagram/museum dates when they played the MIK festival in London this summer. If Pentagon isn't normally your bag, I think the only things you need to know are Kino's government name is Hyunggu, Pentagon are about 1/3 of the way through their enlistment era, and fans have some... real concerns about what's going to happen to them as they run out their contracts. So -

A twitter writing game joined forces with another writing warm-up and suddenly I have 1.5k of Pentagon rare pair canon angst on my hands. A very similar situation to hyuna is red, which is a much more fun Stray Kids wip that dropped 1k in a day and then disappeared in favor of deadlined wips, so we'll see what happens, momentum-wise.

I think we're getting to that point in the writing cycle where I've got like 3 fics wrapping up at about the same time and I bug roxashighwind about which one to publish first as they pat my head and tell me all of them are special in their own way. I think - I think! - I'm going to focus on getting kokobop whipped into shape so I have something solid to work towards while I wait for Rare Pair Fest reveals.

kokobop is one of those fics it feels like no one is really asking for (in the general, universal sense)? Which almost certainly isn't true (maybe we're all secretly yearning for t4t minkey pwp, how should I know) but can be a bit discouraging, even if it does suit the ethos I'm working towards over here. I read over it again this morning and was struck by the difference between the clumsy paragraphs from the original warm-up and the spark from the bits I added later to make sure the sex didn't last all of two seconds. For me, there's a sort of pride-dismay that comes from being able to see the difference so clearly - pride that I've improved in my own eyes, dismayed at how clunky the whole thing is going to feel if I reread it in another year.

But! That's the gig. No use borrowing trouble. None of this is an ask for encouragement or comfort, I just want to document this part of the process so I can learn from it as I move forward. In any case, hopefully I'll have something nice to say about the t4t minkey pwp community by the end of the month.

I put the final touches on Rare Pair Fest and I'm really excited for everyone to read it! This will almost certainly change between now and posting, but it's nice when you get to a point where you feel excited about something again. I realized how many of my early fic favorites I owed to Rarepair Fest when doing the SVT Ship Meme, so it's also kind of nice to feel like I'm ~giving back to the community~. I can be kind of a contrarian, so I find the idea of being a 'rare pair writer' really appealing. I don't know that I've put it into practice enough to have earned that title, but maybe one day, if I eat all of my vegetables and write enough SKZ hyunchan...

I'm thinking about dropping Trans K-Fic Bingo for now. I can't put my finger on why the SKZ/SVT bingo categories feel fun and the trans categories feel Weird, but I'm going to listen to that instinct and take a step back to think about it. I wish everyone who's participating the very best.

Quite frankly I wasn't expecting to get any words in this week between last week's marathon write and this week's social obligations. Most of the count is split evenly between 'there should be a joke' and Rarepair Fest (which is trucking right along, despite its best efforts to the contrary).

Trans K-Fic Bingo is shaping up to be a shared universe deal with one outlier. You would not believe how hard I laughed when I dug through all of my trans-and-adjacent wips and discovered only one that could contribute anything to my bingo card. I have a feeling those fics are going to be in outlining for A While.

Change-Up Fic Fest will be dropping next week at some point! I'm pretty excited about this one. I think it plays to my strengths while also pushing me in new ways, so I'm looking forward to what people will have to say.

On an unrelated note, I'm also thinking about going back into old fics and linking to their respective promotional tweets (and tumblr posts, now that I think about it) at the end, since Moments are no longer a thing and it seems silly to just have those links sitting in a google doc for my own amusement. I don't think that'll get done anytime soon, but quite frankly I'd rather direct people to my ao3 page and let them sort it out than thread all of them again.

In other news, 1.8k of this week's word total happened in the space of one day and now goes by the name Birthday Indulgence: The Return. 'Birthday indulgence' has appeared in the 'deadlined fic updates' section on and off for a few weeks now because I wanted to write something for my birthday again this year but couldn't find a wip or worm with the right ~vibe for it.

For me, a 'birthday indulgence' has several signposts but only one real Criteria. The signposts are generally things I like reading/writing but don't publish much because I worry about what the comments section is going to look like ("are people going to be weird at or about me"), i.e., t4t, a/b/o, more explicit kink, pwp. Thankfully, I occasionally get out of my own head enough to put these elements in non-birthday fic, so they remain only signposts.

The Criteria for birthday fic (besides, like, timing) is that I'm excited about it. I think the characters spark, I think the scenario works, and writing it feels feverish-in-a-good-way. Scrublord was fun, but I wasn't ready to write it. Kokobop might still make it onto ao3 one of these days, but it wasn't 'exciting' enough to clear the "will I have to turn comments off for my own peace of mind" hurdle. The Return is, I think. Like, watch me eat these words next week, but I really like what I'm building here. I hope other people do, too.

I'm feeling properly ~mired now, and twitter's slow lurch to the grave really took the wind out of my sails in the latter part of the week. I've got enough banked for fests that I can afford to take some days away, but it's still disappointing - writing is one of my favorite things to do, and the easiest way to entertain myself on slow days at work. I don't foresee holiday stress making that any easier.

I used up most of my social energy this week figuring out how everyone I want to follow will be supplementing twitter, so I'm pretty happy with this count. I think 5 a week is going to be a reasonable goal as I head into holiday travel, but we'll see how it goes.

Weekly Update

I've decided to try doing a little weekly update to track my progress through various wips/My Big Commenting Project.

Stuff To Know:

I'm happy to talk about pretty much any wip as long as it's not for a fest with an unrevealed period (which will be appropriately identified/redacted).
If you see something that sparks for you, the ideas and basic fic premises on this blog are always free to a good home (details, dialogue, and paragraphs are not).
I name my wips using a combination of description and free association because it's fun and helps me stay emotionally invested in my work. "Seokhan amnesia futurefic"? Boring. Clinical. No flavor. "iron helps us play"? Mysterious. Intriguing. Could be about almost anything! [Was, for some reason, Seokhan amnesia futurefic.] Which is all to say that not every wip will be exactly what it says on the tin, so please adjust your expectations accordingly.
